Carbon Monoxide Poisoning Can Be Deadly If You Do Not Have an Alarm

Carbon Monoxide Poisoning occurs after you have inhaled too much carbon monoxide. CO is a colorless, tasteless, and odorless toxic gas that is usually non-irritating. For most people it is very difficult to detect. Carbon Monoxide usually occurs in homes or office buildings and is cause by gas-powered stoves, ovens, and heaters. Being exposed to too much carbon monoxide can be deadly.

Symptoms of mild CO poisoning include headaches, confusion, lightheadedness, and flu like symptoms. If you have been exposed to carbon monoxide on a regular basis, you could also experience vertigo. Over a prolonged period, the poisons can affect your heart and central nervous system and eventually lead to death. Chronic exposure to low levels of CO over time could lead to confusion, depression, and memory loss.

Domestic carbon monoxide can be prevented if you install a carbon monoxide detector. These devices will detect carbon CO in your home or office. If carbon monoxide is detected an alarm will sound. Carbon Monoxide detectors will measure the levels of CO in your home or office over time and will go off before dangerous levels can accumulate. Some detectors also alert home monitoring systems in order to dispatch emergency services.

Every year over 400 people die from carbon monoxide poisoning in Canada with as many as 5,000 being rushed to the hospital for treatment. CO fatalities are the highest among people over the age of 65; unfortunately, CO deaths continue to rise every year.

If you do not already have a CO detector installed, you should. Familiarize yourself with the sound, which is much like a fire alarm that needs a new battery. You will hear intermittent beeping. This means that gas is leaking and has reached a level that could be dangerous. Whatever you do, don’t panic. If you have a home alarm monitoring system and the alarm goes off, help will be on the way.
