Canada vs. USA Crime Per Capita

Canada vs. USA Crime Per Capita cannot be fairly assessed. There are nearly 320 million people in the United States compared to 34 million in Canada. With that being said, Canada has a higher crime rate per capita than the US. Some people would disagree, but if you look at the statistics, America is less violent than it was 40 years. In the early 1980’s almost 50% of Americans told a General Social Survey that they were afraid to go out alone at night. In 2010, only one-third felt that way.

Unfortunately, the same cannot be said about Canada. Gang violence is spreading like wildfire, as is rampant drug use. Other nations claim that the US is gun crazy, but the same can be said about Canada, especially in the last 10 years.

Massacres like the one that occurred in Aurora, Colorado do not just happen in the United States. On July 16, 2012, the Scarborough Shootings at a friendly neighborhood barbecue left two dead and another 23 injured. The morning after the tragedy, which was linked to gang violence, the mayor of Toronto claimed that his city was the safest in the world and nothing like Detroit. Those that witnessed the tragedy would beg to differ.

The Eaton Centre Shootings that took place in the food court of the popular Toronto shopping mall is just another example of the gun violence that has been spreading throughout Canada.

Breaking and entering can be just as serious a crime. With guns more readily available and gang violence on the rise, more and more people are advised to be on the lookout for suspicious looking characters in their neighborhoods. From the east to the west coast of Canada, police are telling folks to keep their doors and windows locked during the day and especially at night.
