Canadian Cities with the Highest Crime Rates may come as a surprise to some. Most people would think that Toronto or Vancouver would have the highest rates of violent crime, but that is not the case. In 2011, Prince George once again had the highest rate of crime in the country. These findings were based on crime statistics and population rates from 2010 when there were 343 assaults, four aggravated sexual assaults and seven homicides. In 2011, Winnipeg and Manitoba led the pack with the highest homicide rates in Canada.
Victoria in British Columbia was the second most dangerous city in Canada according to Maclean’s magazine. Every year the Canadian Cities with the Highest Crime Rates tend to be on the west coast.
According to the census, increases of violent crime also occurred in Gatineau, Quebec and Guelph, Ontario.
In 2012, Toronto saw an increase in violent crimes with a mass shooting at a barbecue where two people died, and 23 were wounded. In June of 2012, two men were killed after a gunman opened fire at a popular shopping center in Toronto. In September, police warned the public to be aware following a series of thefts, break and enters and sexual assaults. These occurred in the southwest part of the city. Police reported that a man broke into six homes between the hours of 12 am and 5 am on Tuesday September 18.
Belleville Ontario may only have a population of 50,000, but it also had the highest rate of breaking and entering in Canada. Most people would think that this had something to do with the theft and crime spree by Russell Williams, the infamous former colonel, but break-ins were already a serious problem in the city.
The top five cities with the worst property crimes rates in Canada in 2011 were
1. Belleville, Ontario (102%)
2. Prince George, British Columbia (89%)
3. Langley Township, British Columbia (76%)
4. Chilliwack, British Columbia (72%)
