Canada is generally considered safer than the United States, but has seen an increase in property crimes in 2012. Although, aggravated assaults and reported rapes were down in 2011, murder, burglaries, and robberies went up dramatically that same year. The property crime rate in Canada is one of the highest in the world per population.

In October of 2012, property crime in Canada was responsible for 49% of all crimes according to the Canadian criminal code.

Burglary in single-family homes and construction sites is on the upswing in Canada, and unfortunately, crime prevention programs like Neighborhood Watch have had little effect in reducing the rate of property crimes. Wealthier districts all over the country are particularly attractive to would be burglars, but lower income neighborhoods are also at risk.

Distraction burglary is particularly popular in Canada. This type of crime occurs when an offender tries to distract or trick the occupant allowing them access into the property. Children and the elderly are extremely vulnerable when it comes to distraction burglary and property crime.

Because of Canada’s population, statistics report a consistent stream of attempted break-in’s. Burglars try to come through an open window or break a lock on a door. One such incident occurred in Toronto in March of 2012 when a desperate heroin addict smashed a window and attempted to break in. Fortunately, for the homeowner, a security alarm system scared away the burglar.

Obviously, burglaries and property crimes will not happen to everyone. You could live in an area that has been crime free for years, but it can happen. A normally peaceful neighborhood in any city in Canada could be struck by a string of robberies, and if you believe it could never happen to you, think again.

Home alarms in Canada have helped deter a number of would be criminals as have security camera’s. If you are interested in keeping your family and property safe, contact us here.
